Former Glenwood police officer’s DUI case continued

ASPEN – A former Glenwood Springs police officer and Drug Enforcement Administration task-force member is set to appear in Pitkin County Court in Aspen on May 8 to face charges related to drunken driving.

Garfield County sheriff’s deputies arrested Paul Pedersen, 39, outside Silt on Jan. 15. Judges in both the Rifle and Glenwood Springs divisions of Garfield County Court had recused themselves from the case because of the potential for conflict of interest.

The case was moved to Pitkin County, where Judge Erin Fernandez-Ely presides. In a court briefing Tuesday, Fernandez-Ely told Pedersen’s attorney, Lawson Wills, of Snowmass Village, that she does not know the defendant and the potential for conflict does not exist.

Pedersen, of Silt, also has been charged with prohibited use of weapons in addition to having an open container of alcohol and failing to drive in a single lane.

He resigned from the Glenwood Springs Police Department on Feb. 29. Pedersen also was a member of the Two Rivers Drug Enforcement Team and worked on assignment with the DEA, including its investigation that resulted in the 2011 breakup of a cocaine ring that spanned between Los Angeles and Aspen.
