Former Bush official Clarke to speak in July

Aspen Times writer

Richard Clarke, counterterrorism expert and former member of the U.S. National Security Council, will speak in Aspen in July at the annual “State of the World” conference hosted by the Sopris Foundation.

Clarke, a longtime government adviser on terrorism and foreign policy, is the author of the best-selling expose “Against All Enemies: Inside America’s War on Terror.” In the book, published two years after his resignation as Bush’s terrorism adviser, Clarke roundly criticizes the lack of readiness to the terrorist threat before September 11 and Bush’s subsequent war on terror.

Clarke will speak as part of a conference entitled “Creative Minds Address A Broken World.” He will join a host of other prominent speakers, including longtime diplomat Joseph Wilson, another critic of Bush’s Iraq war.

Wilson is currently involved in an investigation after the identity of his wife, a CIA employee, was revealed. A White House special counsel is investigating whether the Bush administration leaked the information in retaliation for Wilson’s criticism over the Iraq war.

The conference will be held from July 9-11 at Paepcke Auditorium. For registration and more information, go to http://www.soprisfoundation.org.
