Forever connected

Dear Editor:

My life changed three days ago when I witnessed Chris Polk’s tragedy on Buttermilk. It was something so difficult to see and experience that it’s still hard to even talk about it. I happened to be riding down the chairlift with my 2-year-old daughter when it happened in front of us ” such a horrible mistake that took a stranger’s life so quickly, on such a beautiful day.

My screams alerted a skier passing by who managed to find Chris, and he then set off the chain of events that led to the most amazing team work by the Buttermilk patrol and others working that day on the mountain. I have come to realize that now I can give a voice to Chris’s last moments alive, and he really looked at peace while riding down on that beautiful day. What’s hard to come to terms with is that I am now that witness to one of the most intimate parts of his life ” we will forever be connected.

I know that each person that played a role that day will be impacted in some way that will touch their lives forever. I would like to thank the Aspen Skiing Co., Buttermilk Ski Patrol (you really are the best!), Buttermilk Ski School, Aspen Counseling Center and everyone involved that awful day for everything! The support, professionalism and caring that you have shown me really is exemplary. I do feel like part of your family now. It’s incredible to me how such a tragedy can bring strangers together and connect them forever. Thank you!
