Dear Editor:

I am delighted to hear the mayor state that “the city of Aspen will not be taking advantage of the ‘windfall’ either for the general fund mill levy or the stormwater runoff program.” I am also pleased that the city manager has reiterated and clarified the mayor’s comment in a letter to the editor with a statement that the “Aspen City Council has provided clear direction for a number of years to keep property tax revenues steady, which means we will be decreasing our mill levies in 2010 to collect approximately the same amount of revenue as in 2009.”

I urge the city of Aspen to honor the statements above re: “… we will be decreasing our mill levies in 2010 to collect approximately the same amount of revenue as in 2009” as the city works through what I am sure will be a challenging final budgeting process.

I encourage all taxing authorities to follow the lead of the Aspen Valley Hospital and Aspen City Council by setting 2010 mill levies to collect approximately the same amount of property tax revenue as in 2009.
