Flying high

Dear Editor:

Congratulations to Ruth Brown and Elizabeth “Betty” Pfister upon receiving the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of their courage to volunteer to serve with the first American women to fly military aircraft. Of 300 American women, 10 from Colorado, so honored, Aspen can be proud that two of these courageous women reside here.

Ruth and Betty, you stepped forward in service to our country, broke gender barriers and opened doors for women who have followed you. Not only did you courageously and generously volunteer for service that put you in harm’s way – 38 of your sister pilots gave their lives, but you have, for so many years, graciously and generously given to our community.

Thank you.
