Flagrant disregard

Editor’s note: The following letter was sent to members of the Aspen City Council.

Dear Editor:

In reference to your contemplated land-use code amendment for the commercial core, I call to your attention the purpose of the surrounding C-1 zone as a transition between the commercial core and the adjacent residential zones.

Recently, you have approved developments in the C-1 zone of height and mass as are permitted in the commercial-core zone, thereby flagrantly disregarding the importance and purpose of the C-1 as the intended transition zone. The Infill Committee review of 2002 retained the C-1 as such a transition zone, and to my knowledge and belief, no code changes have been enacted since.

I urge inclusion of the C-1 zone provisions in our code amendment review in order to retain such a transition zone as an important planning concept for Aspen.
