Flag raises awareness

I was very moved to observe the lowering of the U.S. flag in front of the Carbondale Town Hall early Monday morning in honor of our soldiers lost in the Iraq war. As the names of these men and women were read out, the tragedy of their sacrifice became hauntingly real.

I encourage people to observe and contemplate the flying of the Carbondale flag at half-mast. The flag will be lowered every Monday at 8 a.m. and remain at half-mast throughout the day until the end of the war.
