Fix it, finally

Dear Editor:

I have watched the letters flying back and forth regarding the situation at Krabloonik and needed to add my own comments.

As the former president of Pitkin Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), I was well aware of the cruelty that MacEachen was inflicting on those sled dogs and listened to the song and dance he gave us over the years for his actions. He has on numerous occasions over the past 15 to 20 years agreed to make minor changes and then systematically fallen back into his old barbaric ways. I commend the efforts of the Voices of the Krabloonik Dogs and hope the continued pressure will bring about a resolution finally.

With this incredible community support it is my hope that the Snowmass Town Council will see their role as landlord as one of caretaker and not allow a possibly wonderful amenity to become a black eye on the image of their renaissance.

Although they have been found to meet various agencies “minimum requirements” that is not acceptable in this community and should not be tolerated. I recall the Department of Agriculture would always announce their impending visits giving him time to clean up his act. Perhaps MacEachen could provide the quality care of his dogs if he had fewer to care for. Why in the world does he need 260-plus dogs for this operation? The shelter has been very successful, I am told, with adopting these dogs that no longer provide the level of endurance required of a Krabloonik dog. Every one of these dogs are basically loving beings and should be treated as such. Don’t let this issue disappear again as an out of sight out of mind problem. Let’s fix it once and for all.
