Five Aspen hikes for the Labor Day weekend
Looking to add some outdoor activity time to your Labor Day weekend? Here are five of our favorite hikes in the Aspen area. There is something for everyone here as the hikes range from easy to challenging and some are short hikes (or in the case of a visit to the Maroon Bells, more like a relaxing stroll) while others are all day affairs. Which one will you choose?
A visit to the Maroon Bells
Little Cloud Trail
Located in Aspen, Little Cloud Trail starts behind Koch Lumber Park and winds its way up the side of Aspen Mountain, spitting you out on the Shadow Mountain side on the Summer Road. It’s a short trail at only .63 miles one way, but it is ranked as a moderate hike due to the elevation.
The trailhead for American Lake is located off of Castle Creek Road. This hike is one of the longer ones on our list at 6.2 miles round trip and is ranked moderate.
Sunnyside-Hunter Creek Trail
Pro tip if you are planning to hike the Sunnyside-Hunter Creek loop: start early and bring lots of water. As the name suggests, a good portion of this 10.5 mile hike is in the sun.
The Ute Trail
The Ute Trail is one of the more popular trails in Aspen, but make sure you are prepared for the extremely steep and difficult nature of this trail. You can either stop when you get to Ute Rock overlook, which overlooks the town, or you can continue up another another few miles to the top of Aspen Mountain. If you are hiking just to Ute Rock, the trail is .9 miles one way.
