December 3, 2009
GLENWOOD SPRINGS – Starting Friday morning, for the next four months, it’s all downhill at Sunlight Mountain Resort near Glenwood Springs.
The mountain will open Friday for its 45th season. First chair is at 9 a.m. And with a 16-inch base as of Tuesday, these are the best opening-day conditions the mountain has seen in years.
Both the Tercero and Primo lifts will be operating, giving skiers and snowboarders access to Sun King, Joslin, Upper Primo, Blue Catwalk, Peace Pipe and Midway.
Opening day is also the kick-off to the Glenwood Springs Mall Treasure Hunt. Over the course of the season, three Sunlight season passes will be hidden on the mountain. Interested treasure hunters will find a new clue posted each Friday in the classified section of the Post Independent, at sunlightmtn.com/Events, and in the guest services office on the mountain.
Thursday, to help prime skiers and boarders, the latest ski film by Teton Gravity Research “Re: Session” will premiere at the Hotel Colorado. Tickets are available at Sunlight Ski and Bike Shop, 309 9th St. Doors open to the show at 6 p.m.
On Sunday, it’s off to the snowshoe races with the 18th annual Day of Infamy Snowshoe Race. Ann Hopkinson and Fletcher Anderson developed the popular race to honor the servicemen killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Last year, the race had 200 participants and raised $4,000 that was divided between Colorado Animal Rescue, Rifle Dog Pound, and Mid-Valley Animal Rescue.
