Fireworks a maybe

Aspen Times Staff Report

Aspen fire officials will wait until Thursday to make a final decision about whether it’s safe for the city of Aspen to hold its traditional Fourth of July fireworks display.

“We want to make sure that the moisture content is adequate enough for us to safely shoot fireworks,” said Fire Marshal Ed Van Walraven of the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department.

A hot and sunny spring has left much of Colorado scorched, and very susceptible to forest fires, as evidenced by recent wildfires on the Front Range that burned thousands of acres and destroyed dozens of homes. Pitkin County and the White River National Forest, which comprises a majority of the public lands near Aspen, currently have “burn bans” in effect. So do most counties in Colorado and state and national forests.

“We have not seen a decision yet,” Van Walraven said. “We’re going to wait until Thursday afternoon to see what the weather does, and at that point, we’ll make a decision.”

Van Walraven said officials from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, the Aspen Fire Department and the White River National Forest will collaborate to render the decision.

“All of us are going to put our heads together so we can have a safe Fourth of July, and the key word is safe,” Van Walraven said.
