Fire hits self-storage unit in Basalt

Firefighters from the Basalt and Rural Fire Protection District pried open, one after another, the metal doors of storage units at All Hours Self Storage in Basalt last night.

The fire began in a storage unit of one building at the Park Avenue business at about 8 p.m. and quickly spread into neighboring units. Park Avenue is off Willits Way in the newer section of Basalt.

As firefighters opened the doors of burning units, flames would shoot out from what appeared to be the top of the storage area, giving the impression that the fire was moving through a ventilation system or dead air space in the ceiling.

Basalt Police Officer Mark Langford said the fire was contained in a single building in the multi-building business.

None of the surrounding townhomes or apartments were immediately threatened by the flames, which continued to flare up 45 minutes after the fire was reported.

Firefighters were still on the scene as The Aspen Times went to press.
