Feeling fleeced in Aspen
I have two axes to grind with Aspen.
First: snow reporting. The radio claimed there was 12 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours. Like hell there was!
I went up on the gondola at nine in the morning to ski powder and found nothing but groomed ice and tracked-up crud. No new snow. Perhaps the report was for the last 24 days.
Second: ski shops. After only one run down the mountain I noticed the wax was completely gone from the bottom of my skis. I had them tuned and WAXED the night before at [a local ski shop]. (I was assured this was one of the best shops in town and it is only a half-block from the gondola.)
Trying to control my anger, I walked over to [the shop] and asked to see the manager. The grumpy owner was there. I showed him my waxless skis that I had paid good money to have WAXED.
Instead of apologizing and rectifying the situation, he gave me a song and dance about special plastic bases and microscopic pores. He claimed it may look like there was no wax on my skis but it really was there. Yeah right, just like the 12 inches of powder.
I know when I’m getting fleeced; I’ve had it with this crap. I won’t be coming back to Aspen. I’m going to take my money to Europe where they still have real Alpine Ski Resorts.

Aspen’s dirty downtown alleys are enough of a blight that the city government is taking the initiative to clean them up this week.
