Fed Ex box not really stolen

Aspen Times Staff Report

A Federal Express drop box was reportedly swiped from out in front of the Courthouse Plaza building Tuesday morning, but the suspected heist turned out to be a simple misunderstanding.

“A person in the Courthouse Plaza called us and said that somebody drove up and put the Fed Ex drop box in a truck and took off,” said Chris Womack, Aspen police officer.

When police arrived to investigate, the reporting party told Womack, “Yeah, they’re in that big white moving truck, right over there,” pointing across the street, Womack said.

Womack contacted the two men in the truck, one of whom was wearing a Fed Ex jacket, he said. The man then produced some paperwork which convinced Womack that the two were on the level, he said.

“They had picked up a total of six of them, and that was the last one,” he said.

“The one said he was surprised that the police hadn’t ever checked them out before, because they never talk to anybody when they do it,” Womack said.

The two simply back up the unmarked truck to a drop box, hop out, pick it up, shuffle it over to the truck and plunk it in back, and then speed off, he said.

“They thought it was comical” that we checked up on them, Womack said.
