Fear and the Patriot Act
Dear Editor:Fear is a powerful agent which can used for good or ill, depending on how it is used and by whom. The Patriot Act is a case in point: The FBI and their ilk are currently using fear of terrorism to trample on basic individual rights to privacy to try and force libraries and librarians to cough up information on what individuals might be reading, all in the name of national security. I’m sorry, but this smacks of a double standard, and government run amok. Our country’s strength has always lay in its protection of an individual’s personal rights, and here are government agencies trampling on those very rights in their zeal to pursue terrorists. The laws are for the common good. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water simply because one needs to get rid of the dirty water.Bob KeenanCarbondale
