Expansion needed at Basalt library

Dear Editor:The Basalt Regional Library District is facing an urgent need. With our current 3,845-square-foot building now serving a district of 10,000 residents and a projected population increase to 17,000 by 2016, a new library is overdue. As an indication, between August 2005 and 2006, circulation increased over 18 percent and library usage nearly tripled. There will be two questions on the November ballot: 4A asks for a mill levy increase to generate funds for operating expenses with the passage of the second question, 4B asking for a 20-year bond issue for a new building. A yes vote will insure that a single, new library will be built in Basalt on the site next to the Basalt post office. This site affords easy access from downtown Basalt, the schools, and by foot, car or bus.Early voting and absentee voting are encouraged as the ballot will be long. Early voting for all counties begins Oct. 23 and an application for an absentee ballot can be downloaded by going to Basaltrld.org and following the link under Local and National in the upper right corner of the screen.Polly PollardBRLD Board President
