Evolution now, gravity next

Dear Editor:I was intrigued with the article you chose to include in Thursday’s (March 2) paper regarding “Creation Evangelism” and the seminars offered by Ken Ham. If this qualifies as news, particularly education news, then I’m afraid you are scraping the bottom of the barrel. It is profoundly disappointing that the current climate among various media seeks ways to present only the fanatical aspects of Christianity.Ken Ham, while free to believe and say what he wants, does not represent the mainstream of Christian thought, and certainly does not reflect anything close to the Christianity proclaimed from my pulpit. My question is: Where is the balance? Why is it almost everyone will recognize the names Pat Robertson or James Dobson while articulate, thinking, Christian theologians like Marcus Borg, John Shelby Spong or Matthew Fox seem obscure? Is it not newsworthy that the Aspen Community Church is working diligently to re-image Christianity? We are seeking ways to rescue the kidnapped Jesus held hostage by the religious right and fanatical fundamentalist and return Christianity to the ideals of inclusiveness, diversity, unconditional love and overwhelming compassion. These things are the legacy that Jesus left us to follow, in my opinion.I suppose after the war on evolution grows tiresome the next target will be the law of gravity and there will be a push to teach “intelligent falling” instead.Chuck CramPastor, Aspen Community Church
