Event tonight benefits Mountain Rescue, avalanche center

An auction and film tonight at the Wheeler Opera House will benefit the new Roaring Fork Avalanche Center and Mountain Rescue Aspen.Everything from on-mountain supplies and clothing to massages and a night at the Hotel Jerome will be up for bid, said Brian McCall, avalanche center director.”We’ve got a wide variety of stuff,” he said.McCall said the avalanche center released its first forecast Monday – moderate danger, with pockets of considerable harm.”We’re finally getting up-and-running here,” he said. “Now we’re just working on the fund-raising so we can pay our employees here.”The auction will be from 5 to 9 p.m., and the movie will be shown at 6 and 9 p.m. The extreme skiing, Warren Miller-type film was shot with a high-definition camera. It was donated to Mountain Rescue Aspen for fund-raising purposes, and the rescue group offered to split the profits from the evening with the avalanche center, McCall said.Mountain Rescue Aspen “has been one of our biggest supporters from the beginning.”
