Ertl extends World Cup overall lead

Aspen Times Staff Report

Ski racer Martina Ertl said she liked Aspen so much that she hoped to come back for a vacation.

And given the German’s success here in World Cup races Friday and Saturday, who wouldn’t want to come back? Ertl nailed a fourth in the super G and a second in the slalom to preserve her overall World Cup lead over Janica Kostelic of Croatia.

Meanwhile, the 18-year-old Croatian sensation cruised comfortably to her second slalom victory in as many tries this season. Kristina Koznick of Minnesota took third place in slalom for the top American finish.

An estimated 60 million people watched the weekend races live, while at least a thousand spectators piled into the finish-area grandstands to watch the first women’s World Cup races in Aspen since 1988.
