Equal rights for all

Dear Editor:Many citizens aren’t aware that in our state of Colorado it is currently legal to discriminate against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in schools, the work force, and in housing/renting. Although gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender citizens make up a “minority group” of our state and country, allowing this unjust discrimination counters constitutional and moral human rights values.According to our 14th Amendment, everyone is guaranteed equal protection under the law, “… no State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law …”It takes a toll on our society, for it creates problems such as higher suicide rates among GLBT youth (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, religioustolerance.org). We feel like this is a serious problem for it’s a stressful contribution to teen angst. As a reflection to this we are planning to propose a bill to the Colorado state Legislature that would include GLBT people under anti-discrimination laws in employment, schools, and housing/renting.
