This spring, five of our second-grade classes at Aspen Elementary proudly raised $769.94 for Pennies for Peace, an international service-learning program that empowers communities through the education of children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. This program was initiated by Dr. Greg Mortensen, a speaker at this year’s Aspen Ideas Festival.
Dr. Mortensen wrote both “Stones into Schools” and “Three Cups of Tea.” Both of these books are about his efforts to raise money and awareness to build schools, especially for girls, in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Dr. Mortensen believes that the way to abolish war and terrorism is through education and literacy, and he is especially passionate about giving educational opportunities to girls (who are traditionally ignored by the government-supported schools in these two impoverished countries).
Our children’s lives were so enriched by participating in this project! We are happy to be able to contribute to Dr. Mortensen’s efforts to educate children, and particularly girls, in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
We are looking forward to his upcoming visit to Aspen as a part of the Aspen Ideas Festival. Our children are so excited to know that Dr. Mortensen is going to be right here in our community!
