Energy industry sues over new Colorado drilling rules

DENVER ” An energy industry trade group has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn Colorado’s new, stricter rules for oil and gas drilling.

The Colorado Oil and Gas Association sued in Denver District Court last week, saying state regulators didn’t fully consider the effects the rules would have on energy companies’ operations and finances.

State officials say they did a thorough analysis of the impacts.

The rules require regulators to give more consideration to the environment, wildlife and public health and safety when approving oil and gas development.

Gov. Bill Ritter signed a bill in late April implementing the rules after more than 18 months of meetings and deliberations by regulators, oil and gas officials, environmentalists, landowners and others.
