Emma for Open Space

Dear Editor: At a recent meeting of the Emma Caucus, a motion was passed to support ballot Referendum 1B, which will extend the current mill levy for Pitkin County’s Open Space and Trails Program. Not only has this program been very successful in preserving working ranches throughout the county, it has also been instrumental in establishing the Rio Grande pedestrian/bike trail, making it possible to travel from Aspen to Carbondale without a car!Recent conservation efforts in the Emma area will benefit all Roaring Fork Valley residents as these Open Space/ranch land parcels create a buffer amidst all the new development occurring midvalley. Adding oversight of the Nordic Trail system to the program guarantees the preservation and possible expansion of this precious resource as well. The time is now to preserve what remains of the county’s ranching operations. Keeping working ranch families on their land is an important county priority to maintain the quality of life for all of us. We strongly support continued funding of this successful program and encourage all citizens to vote Yes on Referendum 1B.George NewmanEmma Caucus
