Emergency contraception made available Friday

Dear Editor: In April, Gov. Owens vetoed House Bill 1212 – Colorado’s Prescriptive Authority Bill – which authorized pharmacists to prescribe and dispense emergency contraception to women. This bill would have allowed pharmacists, who are the most accessible medical professionals, to prescribe EC if they choose too, but the law didn’t force them to do so.The governor turned his back on the women of Colorado, but Planned Parenthood won’t. On behalf of all Colorado women, we are proudly offering one free pack of EC-to-go to keep at home – just in case. Women can get their free pack at any of our 25 Colorado health centers on Friday, June 30.Emergency contraception is the best way to prevent unintended pregnancy in cases of rape, incest or contraceptive failure. EC is a special combination of birth control pills that, when taken within five days of unprotected sex, can safely prevent pregnancy – the sooner it’s taken, the more effective it is in preventing pregnancy.Experts estimate that wider access to EC could prevent 1.7 million unintended pregnancies and 800,000 abortions every year. Planned Parenthood believes all women should have access to options that prevent unintended pregnancy.Visit us on Friday, June 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Glenwood Springs Health Center, located at 410 20th St., Suite. 203 for your free pack of EC-to-go. Or contact (800) 230-PLAN (7526) or visit http://www.pprm.org for the health center nearest you.Terri WormManager, Glenwood Springs Health CenterPlanned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains
