Embrace winter solstice

Dear Editor:

Friday marks the very auspicious 2012 winter solstice. It’s also the day the Mayan calendar runs out. There is a flurry of opinion about what this means. Some are hailing it as the beginning of a golden age; others are reacting by building bomb shelters and hoarding food. A panelist on “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me,” the NPR news quiz show, has predicted that on Dec. 22 a bunch of panicked Mayans will be running around trying to get their Christmas shopping done.

Is it the end of the world as we know it? What with the polar ice caps melting, gridlock in Congress, Superstorm Sandy and now the unspeakably tragic shootings in Newtown, Conn., a little course correction might not be out of line. In any case, we each might view this turning point as an invitation to show up at our best, with hearts and minds fully engaged, and do and be all that we can.

On a local level, my husband and musical partner J.D. Martin and I will be celebrating Friday with our 22nd annual Winter Solstice Concert at the lovely old Community Church in Aspen. It will be an evening of music, merriment and deep gratitude as we honor the light and the shadow, the continuity of life and the universal triumph of peace and good will on earth. All ages and spiritual traditions are welcome.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m., $20 at the door, kids $10. A percentage of the proceeds will go to the church restoration fund. More information is at http://www.garrett-martin.com

Thank you, and happy holidays.
