Lifelong valley resident and local rancher Elmer Edmund Roberts, 84, of Silt, passed away on Dec. 12, 2010 at the E. Dene Moore Care Center in Rifle. He will be remembered by many for his love of the outdoors, hard work and most importantly, family.

Elmer was born Feb. 25, 1926 to Leon and Ethel Lounsbury Roberts on a dry-land homestead near Carbondale. Walking long distances each way, he attended school in that area and finished through the eighth-grade.

After moving to the Snowmass area at the age of 14, he went to work for his future wife’s uncle. He worked in the tourist business and also on farms in the area, riding for cattle and general farm work.

Elmer married Mildred Carroll at Grand Junction, 63 years ago. After moving to Glenwood Springs in 1944, he operated a trucking business -hauling coal, gravel and he also hauled German Prisoners of War to pick potatoes in the Woody Creek area near Aspen.

Elmer farmed, raised cattle and sheep for approximately the next 53 years. He was a great promoter of water use for irrigation and also domestic use. He was a board member and president of the Farmer’s Irrigation Co. when the Rifle Gap Reservoir was built. In the Harvey Gap Area (where he farmed), he was responsible for putting in several miles of pipeline for domestic use.

Being a very good hand at mechanic work and machinery repair, he was always helping his neighbors with that type of work. He was a member of the American Farm Bureau, Colorado Sheep Industry, Colorado Wool Growers and the Congregational Church.
