She was the devoted mother of Carolyn (Chuck) Arnold, David (Jamie) Cole and the late Thomas R. Cole and was the cherished grandmother of Eric, Jon and Jane Arnold and Lauren and Elizabeth Cole. Ellen also is survived by brothers Bob (Sally) Gries and Tom Gries.

Ellen did her undergraduate and graduate work at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and earned a master’s degree in psychiatric social work.

Ellen moved to Aspen 22 years ago. She was an avid skier as well as tennis player and golfer. An active philanthropist, the Aspen schools’ literacy program and Ballet Aspen were two organizations to which Ellen devoted her time and resources.
