Ellen Gries Cole

Ellen Gries Cole died peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008.
She was the devoted mother of Carolyn (Chuck) Arnold, David (Jamie) Cole and the late Thomas R. Cole and was the cherished grandmother of Eric, Jon and Jane Arnold and Lauren and Elizabeth Cole. Ellen also is survived by brothers Bob (Sally) Gries and Tom Gries.
Ellen did her undergraduate and graduate work at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and earned a master’s degree in psychiatric social work.
Ellen moved to Aspen 22 years ago. She was an avid skier as well as tennis player and golfer. An active philanthropist, the Aspen schools’ literacy program and Ballet Aspen were two organizations to which Ellen devoted her time and resources.
Ellen was dearly loved by all who knew her. She was a gentle, soft-spoken person whose beautiful smile and warm heart touched many. Her death has left a great void in the hearts of her many friends.
Donations can be made to the Junior League of Boca Raton, Fla., Endowment Fund, and/or the Aspen charity of choice. A memorial service will be held in Aspen at a later date to be announced.

At the start of the 2023-2024 ski season, Mone Anthan set an ambitious goal for himself: uphill 85 times for his 85th birthday. By the time his birthday came on March 15, he had surpassed 85 uphills and was shooting for 100.
