Elementary principal to resign
Aspen Elementary School Principal Robin Whitacre announced yesterday that she is leaving her position at the end of the school year.Whitacre, who took over Aspen Elementary School two years ago, said she is quitting so she can move with her husband to Denver.
“My husband and I are going to start a family,” Whitacre said. “Being a principal is a very time-consuming job. It’s just not conducive to being a mother.”Whitacre, 35, was a principal for four years at a school in St. Louis before moving to Aspen in 2002. In her two years here, she oversaw the implementation of tuition for full-day kindergarten classes and the adoption of strict class-size limitations.Whitacre said she will look for teaching positions in Denver but has ruled out taking another principal position. Aspen School District Superintendent Diana Sirko said Whitacre’s decision did not come as a surprise.
“Robin and I have been discussing this for a few weeks,” Sirko said. “I knew it was a direction she was leaning. We already have a schedule to find a replacement.”Sirko said school districts usually have a high turnover for principals. She said the average tenure for principals across the nation is only three years. The district has already launched a national search for a new principal. A committee composed of eight teachers, two support staff members, four parents, and headed by Aspen Middle School Principal Paula Canning will begin interviews in February. A new principal should be announced by the first week of March.
At around the same time, the district will also announce a replacement for high school Principal Kendall Evans, who is retiring at the end of the year.Whitacre will continue her regular responsibilities until the end of the school year, Sirko said.Eben Harrell’s e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org
The Aspen City Council directed staff to move forward with the Burlingame early childhood education center, but decided it needs more information on the affordable housing units that are part of the schematic design at a work session Monday.
