Efficiency grants available for Pitkin County homeowners

Low- and moderate-income homeowners in Pitkin County are being offered the chance to apply for grants for energy-efficiency upgrades.

The Community Office for Resource Efficiency, or CORE, has introduced a pilot program to award a $2,500 grant to 30 homeowners. It will be a competitive grant process.

The applicants who are accepted will receive a home-energy assessment that includes on-the-spot energy improvements, free energy coaching from CORE’s Energy Smart coaches, and $2,000 to $2,300 for energy-efficiency improvements.

The improvements will be customized for each home. They could include insulation, air-sealing, energy-efficient appliances or a new boiler or furnace. Homeowners can apply for a low-interest loan from the Energy Smart Revolving Loan program if needed improvements go beyond the $2,500 grant.

To qualify, a single homeowner can earn as much as $40,215 and a family of four can earn as much as $82,425, according to CORE.

“It is important to our organization that we are extending our services throughout the community, improving energy efficiency for low- to mid-income households, and saving them money on their monthly utility bills,” Mona Newton, executive director of CORE, said in a statement.

CORE’s Reach program is accepting application now through Jan. 31. For more information, visit http://aspencore.org/reach.
