Editor vows return of Latino newspaper

Aspen Times Staff Report

The editor of a Spanish-language newspaper in the Roaring Fork Valley said the publication will return after taking a week off.

The weekly Mundo Latino newspaper didn’t appear this week but founder, publisher and editor Ruben Medina said it is “coming out next week again.” He said he has experienced some trouble collecting payment for advertising but hopes to have the situation resolved.

Mundo Latino started in October 2001. It was one of three Spanish-language newspapers started in the Roaring Fork Valley that year. El Sol Valle has folded. La Mision continues to publish monthly.

Mundo Latino focuses on hard news while La Mision tends to go with feature stories. Medina said he feels his paper has been well received. Some advertisers have called to tell him they get a good share of their business from ads in the publication.

Medina said he distributes about 3,000 copies of Mundo Latino from Rifle to Aspen and from Gypsum to Avon. Putting out the paper has been difficult, he explained, because he does everything himself ? from graphic design to writing, editing and distributing. But “I’m not going to give up,” he said.

Mundo Latino is at a disadvantage because it carries a financial burden that La Mision doesn’t face. Medina pays The Aspen Daily News to print his paper. La Mision is printed for free by Colorado Mountain News Media, the parent company of The Aspen Times.
