Eagle, Pitkin counties under a ‘red flag’ warning for Thursday

EAGLE COUNTY — The Grand Junction office of the National Weather Service on the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 29 has replaced a “fire weather” watch for the afternoon and evening of Thursday, Aug. 30 with a “Red Flag” warning. That warning applies to areas of Eagle and Pitkin counties below 8,000 feet elevation.

The weather forecast calls for warm temperatures and southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. In addition, relative humidity is expected to be very low — between 10 and 15 percent.

According to the notice, “A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.”

The warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Pitkin County said in an updated alert Thursday morning.

Both counties are set to ease current fire restrictions from very-strict Stage 2 to less-strict Stage 1 at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. The less-strict restrictions allow campfires in designated campgrounds. Fire officials are still urging people to use extreme caution with virtually anything that makes a spark.
