Eagle County OKs pared-down budget
Aspen, CO Colorado
EAGLE COUNTY, Colo. ” Citing an uncertain economy and the need for a conservative approach to spending in the upcoming year and beyond, Eagle County commissioners Monday unanimously approved a $109 million budget for 2009.
The budget reflects a $5 million cut in operating expenditures from 2008.
The county anticipates a 5 percent decline in sales tax revenues and a 4 percent reduction in license and permit fees from 2008.
However, the 2009 budget maintains county services at current levels and continues investments in community programs and capital improvements, such as the justice center expansion.
In addition, the budget contains a contingency of $3.2 million, which includes savings from unfilled staff positions. The commissioners created the contingency to ensure the county could withstand larger-than-anticipated dips in revenue before being forced to consider staffing or service cuts.
The commissioners also approved a total combined mill levy of 8.499 for the next fiscal year, an amount that has remained unchanged since 2004. The board will certify mill levies for the remaining taxing districts in the county on Dec. 18.
