Eagle County commish candidates visit Basalt

Five applicants for an Eagle County commissioner seat will be interviewed in Basalt on Wednesday in a process open to public observation.

The Eagle County Democratic Party Vacancy Committee will be interviewed at the Basalt Middle School auditorium at 6:30 p.m. The public won’t be able to ask questions at the meeting but can email questions to the selection committee at vacancy@eagledems.org.

There is a vacant seat on the three-member Board of County Commissioners after Jon Stavney resigned to become the Eagle town manager. The Eagle County Democrats get to choose his successor because Stavney was elected as a Democrat. Although the District 2 seat is in the Eagle Valley, the commissioners represent all county residents. El Jebel, part of Missouri Heights, part of the Fryingpan Valley and most of Basalt are in Eagle County.

Roaring Fork Valley activists are using the interview session as a chance to educate the commissioner candidates about issues in this part of the county. The five candidates will take a bus tour of the midvalley starting at 5:15 p.m. They will check out the Grange and Saltonstall open space properties, which Eagle County helped acquire. They also will check out work on new bus stops and the Willits Town Center Development, among other projects.

The candidates were interviewed in Eagle earlier this month. The vacancy committee aims to make a selection on Wednesday or June 19. The term starts July 1.
