Eagle Co. inmate shoots himself on work release

EAGLE, Colo. – An Eagle County inmate who shot himself in the gut while on work release now faces false reporting charges.

The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office says that Michael Maher shot himself in the abdomen Friday while on work release. Maher called the jail minutes before he was to report back for the night and said he’d been shot.

Authorities found Maher bleeding in his Toyota Tundra truck in Avon. Authorities say Maher gave conflicting stories about what happened, but they determined he’d shot himself.

Maher is serving an 18-month sentence for violating probation. Authorities say he’ll now face additional charges including false reporting.

Maher was recovering at the Vail Valley Medical Center.
