ASPEN ” A dump truck slammed into an Aspen police cruiser Wednesday along Maroon Creek Road.

Sgt. Rob Fabrocini was shaken and a little stiff after the crash, which happened shortly before noon, he said. He was not seriously injured.

The driver of the truck, Juan Equivel of Western Colorado Excavating, will be cited for following too close, or “inattentive driving,” according to sheriff’s deputies, who investigated the case to avoid any conflict of interest in the matter.

Fabrocini was stopped behind a driver’s education van making a left turn from Maroon Creek onto Moore Drive near Aspen High School when the truck hit him, according to sheriff’s deputies.

“I looked in the mirror and saw a huge truck coming,” Fabrocini said.

He immediately turned the steering wheel to the right and took his foot off the brakes to soften the impact, he said.

The dump truck ran into his cruiser and Fabrocini’s vehicle subsequently grazed the van in front of him before rolling out of the way, he said.

The bumper on the police cruiser was pushed in, but damage to the van was minor, Fabrocini said.

The Aspen police sergeant was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital for a routine checkup after the incident.

“I’m stiff,” Fabrocini said, adding he’ll be back at work Thursday.
