Driver `fair’ after crash

Aspen Times Staff Report

An Aspen woman who sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision on Highway 82 Wednesday night was listed in “fair condition” Thursday at Aspen Valley Hospital.

Melissa Gonzalez, 22, was in surgery Thursday afternoon, an AVH spokesperson said.

Her Volkswagen collided with a vehicle driven by Steven Quint of Glenwood Springs after Quint’s vehicle apparently struck a rock that fell into the road in Snowmass Canyon, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Quint sideswiped another car before colliding with Gonzalez. Rescuers had to extricate her from her vehicle.

Quint suffered minor injuries and was cited for having no proof of insurance.

The crash blocked traffic in both directions on Highway 82 for about an hour, forcing authorities to detour traffic.
