PRESCOTT, Ariz. ” A trio of environmental groups say they are suing the U.S. Forest Service for approving a series of new uranium test drilling sites only a few miles from the Grand Canyon National Park.

The Forest Service gave British mining company VANE Minerals permission to drill at up to 39 locations in the Kaibab National Forest in northern Arizona in December.

The suit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Prescott, Ariz. claims the government violated several environmental and other laws when it approved the drilling without full environmental reviews. It was filed by the Center for Biological Diversity, Sierra Club and Grand Canyon Trust.

Officials with the Forest Service didn’t immediately return calls seeking comment.
