Don’t forget about solar power

(This letter was originally addressed to the mayor and City Council.)

You are considering an infill ordinance to allow more square footage to be built in our town by increasing building heights, increasing FAR, eliminating open space requirements, eliminating setbacks, and eliminating viewplanes.

At the same time, our nation may start a war ostensibly to remove an evil regime, but more than coincidentally to keep our petroleum-based economy humming. The new square footage you are encouraging will only add to our thirst for petroleum.

Please search for alternate approaches to make Aspen better without making Aspen BIGGER.

For example, solar access easements were considered and dismissed as having a “critical negative effect on the Infill Program’s viability.” Failing to implement solar access easements because Aspen needs more development is short sighted.

If we eventually realize the value of solar energy and sustainability, it will be very difficult if not impossible to take back the development rights granted under Infill. Boulder, Colorado, among others, has such solar access legislation, and I urge you to seriously weigh the “critical negative effect” of solar access with the burning need for more development before passing the Infill legislation.

Solar access legislation should come first with development near the bottom of the priority list.
