Don’t back puppy mills

Dear Editor:

Puppy mills are commercial mass-dog-breeding facilities run by greedy owners who put profit ahead of health and well-being of dogs, which live in unsanitary conditions, and their lives are filled with neglect and unspeakable cruelty.

Sadly, most people don’t realize these horrible living conditions behind those adorable puppies for sale through professional-looking website and newspaper ads. The puppies’ parents are kept in small wire cages their entire lives without adequate food and water, exercise or medical care, and forced to breed nonstop.

As a result, thousands of puppies are sold with health problems, and their devastated guardians end with an enormous vet bill. Right now, there are approximately 4 million unfortunate dogs bred each year in the nearly 10,000 puppy mills across the U.S.

Buyer beware: Investigation has revealed that even though the origin of puppy mill is denied, that’s exactly where the puppy was born. Buying a puppy from a puppy mill simply fuels this inhumane industry.

If you want a dog, please adopt from an animal shelter. Sadly, there are 3 million to 4 million unwanted dogs euthanized each year. There are also breed-specific rescues in your area, or go to a reputable breeder and visit their premises.

Never buy a puppy without seeing where it and its parents were housed and raised.
