Doesn’t anyone care?

Dear Editor:Tear down the fire department for a performing arts center? Too few of you remember when Freddie Fisher playing at the Limelite was a performing art! The big fire department bell in Willard Clapper Park is touched daily by children who can instinctively feel the work ethic and kindness personified by the extensive Clapper family. The Thrift Shop is more than a recycle center. It is a refuge for humanity. One day a nearly homeless man said to me, “You would never have known it but you saved my life. I was depressed and suicidal and I would come in here where you would greet me with a smile and be glad to see me while you sold me shirts for a dollar. It saved me to know that someone cared.”Doesn’t anyone “care” anymore? Dr. Whit looking down on us cared. His wife, Polly, who for years has made the Thrift Shop attractive by hauling countless armfuls of clothing up and down countless stairs cares. Sally Simon’s flower garden reminds us that she cared – and the list goes on!What’s next, turn St. Mary Church into a boutique because it’s centrally located and the stained glass windows would provide ambiance?Mary Lou ZordelEmma
