Do some planet gazing from Aspen
July 3, 2012
ASPEN – Vermont resident Russ Schleipman, who is visiting Aspen for a few days, says he will set up a re-engineered Porter Garden telescope Tuesday evening on the sidewalk of the 500 block of East Hyman Avenue, across the street from Little Annie’s restaurant.
The public is invited to join him for a look at the planets Saturn and Mars and later a nearly full moon, weather permitting, he said. He plans to get started at about 7:30 p.m.
The telescope is named after the father of amateur astronomy, Russell W. Porter, who designed it in the 1920s. One of the original devices sits in the Smithsonian.
