Aspen police are connecting the community — one sweet, almighty doughnut at a time.

From 8-10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23, the Aspen Police Department (APD) will host a Donuts with the Cops event at its headquarters on 540 E. Main St.

There will be on-hand doughnut chefs and coffee for anyone who wants to attend. Multiple police officers and community resource officers will be present to help connect with the community and answer lingering questions community members have.

“An important component for policing a community is that the communication be a two-way street,” APD Assistant Chief Bill Linn said. “With doughnuts being a bit of a cliche for police, it’s just a fun way for us to reach out to the community.”

The recurring event allows people to engage with the APD in a safe and low-stress environment involving their concerns or questions in the community. It also gives the community a chance to connect and to meet new people over doughnuts.

“We’re typecast as liking donuts, but the truth is, do you know why cops like donuts?” he asked. “Because everybody likes donuts.”

The event has been running for several years and turnout is expected to be large. The APD hopes people will continue to take the opportunity to engage with the police in the community.

Just don’t expect to learn what a cop’s favorite doughnut is.

“Asking for my favorite doughnut is like saying, ‘What’s your favorite child?'” Linn said. “I’m not giving that up.”
