DiMaria leads riders up the pass

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Independence Pass Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the road cuts over Independence Pass, staged the fifth annual Ride for the Pass on Saturday.

The Colorado Department of Transportation opened Highway 82 one week early specifically for the event, which drew a field of more than 300 riders.

The course ran from the winter gate area to the ghost town of Independence, a distance of 10 miles with an elevation gain of 2,461 feet. A total of 298 riders completed the ride all the way to Independence.

The top finisher in the race was Danny DiMaria, who crossed the finish line in 44:15.65. Second place went to Kevin Willson with a time of 44:25.30, and third went to Michael Scanlon in 44:33.69. The fourth-place finisher, Nathan Waldron, came out of the male 11-19 category with a time of 44:53.43.

The top finisher among women and 33rd overall was Kelly Murphy, with a time of 51:36.88. She was followed by Alison Vandoorninck (54:57.31), Carole Sharp (55:19.41) and Katie Willey (55:54.68).

Proceeds from the benefit ride will help to revegetate and stabilize the top cut of the pass, a 1.5-mile section of severely eroded hillsideand road cut near the summit.
