Determined climbers summit Everest for mom


The Climb for a Cure team made the summit of Everest this week in honor of Jackie Oestrike, who died of cancer last year.Jackie’s son Brian Wilfred Oestrike and fellow climber Justin Joel Hewitt reached the summit of Everest at 12:40 p.m. Tibetan Standard Time on Tuesday. The team is raising money for Lungevity, a foundation raising money for cancer research.Brian Oestrike’s younger sister, Katie, and her friend Rachel Rankin both live in Aspen and supported the climbers as far as Camp II on the Tibetan side.It was a fairly late summit, but the climbers made it to the top of the world and descended without major incident, according to online posts at”Ya did good Mum! Real good,” reads the caption next to a photo of Jackie Oestrike on the website. “They made it!! Your memory will live on with us forever. Happy belated Mother’s Day!”
