Delta adding daily winter Telluride-area flights

TELLURIDE, Colo. – Delta Air Lines is adding daily flights between Atlanta and the Montrose-Telluride area in Colorado for next ski season.
Delta previously offered winter Atlanta-to-Montrose flights on Saturdays, but from Dec. 18 through April 3, it will offer daily flights between Montrose and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world’s busiest.
The Telluride Montrose Regional Air Organization guarantees airlines a certain amount of revenue if they fly to airports in Montrose and Telluride and pays them if revenues fall short.
The organization paid $1.4 million to airlines this season out of a possible $2.2 million, Executive Director Scott Stewart said Friday. Its exposure for next winter is $3.3 million.
Telluride Ski Area contributes about 20 percent of the group’s funding, but money also comes from restaurant and lodging taxes in Telluride and Mountain Village, the city of Montrose’s general fund and about 80 area businesses.
“We’re in a relatively remote destination that relies on guests being able to fly in,” Stewart said. “Without the ability to do risk abatement with airlines, we would not have the level of service we have regarding seats they’re bringing in.”
