Dean, supporters remain true to form

Hats off to Ben Nelson for kicking off a presidential election year with a brief foray into standard anti-Bush conspiracy-theory demagoguery before concluding with the meat of the “red state-blue state” matter: a delightful intellectual tic betraying geographic prejudice as to exactly how far removed one must be from Howard Dean’s “sanity” (Montpelier suburbs?) to unleash this immoral and illegal war.

Indeed, you must reach south ” far south ” into the bowels of small town “redneck” country. Dean recently learned, to his dismay, what happens when you bungle your appeal to the white trash vote ” producing an impeccable tempest of class snobbery, regional condescension and political correctness among his primary rivals.

But in truth, everyone knows that George Bush is more moneyed and blueblooded than Howard Dean could ever hope to be. And this leaves wide open the question as to whether Dean and his supporters like Mr. Nelson can go a full year without dropping their veil again and again ” insulting the very people whose votes they so desperately need.

I, for one, fully expect them to remain true to form.
