Aspen Times Staff Report

The Colorado State Patrol has yet to determine the exact chain of events behind an accident on Highway 82 earlier this week that took the lives of two local residents.

Sing Guo Wu, 24, and Yiao Jun Zhang, 35, were killed Monday morning after they were hit by a vehicle driven by a Basalt woman while they pushed a van on the highway. Early accounts indicated Wu and Zhang were pushing the van to the side of the road after it broke down.

But Colorado State Patrol Captain Fred Bitterman said the pair may have been attempting to jump-start the van. Some witnesses have said they saw the victims pushing the van a minute or two before the accident.

“Apparently the vehicle was broken down,” Bitterman said, “but they thought they could push start it, even though it’s an automatic.”

Bitterman said he doesn’t expect the investigation to finish until next week. Once it is finished, the patrol will consult with the district attorney’s office to see if any charges are appropriate.
