Today is the deadline for registered voters in Snowmass Village to drop off their ballots in the town’s first-ever recall election.

As of Monday afternoon, 567 ballots had been cast, said Town Clerk Rhonda Coxon, who wasn’t sure how many more would be dropped off or would reach the town’s mailbox today. Coxon had expected a turnout closer to 900, as in regular council elections, but wondered if residents weren’t voting because the recall is a special election.

“It just depends on how many people have been holding on to their ballots for (today),” she said.

The drop-off box is located in the administrative offices in Town Hall, which will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today for the election. Voters who need a replacement ballot also can do that at Town Hall.

To date, administering the election has cost the town about $6,320, Coxon said Monday. That amount doesn’t include compensation for the election judges, who will be paid after today.

The recall ballots ask two questions, the first being whether Councilman Chris Jacobson should be recalled from office. Should the “yes” votes outnumber the “no” votes, election judges will then count the number of votes cast for three candidates vying to replace Jacobson. Those are Tom Goode, Richard Goodwin and Jamie Knowlton.

A residents’ effort to recall Jacobson launched after he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in June and later charged with criminal mischief for damage he caused to the Pitkin County Jail that night. Jacobson, who refused to resign and who continued attending council meetings for several weeks after the incident, has been absent for the body’s past eight meetings.

If Jacobson is recalled, the candidate with the most votes will be sworn in at the Town Council’s next meeting Oct. 19.
