Dana B. Orwick, a longtime summer resident of Aspen, died of cancer on May 27 in Rockville, Md.

Orwick, 82, was born April 2, 1918 in Findlay, Ohio. He made his home in Bethesda, Md. and enjoyed a long career in the U.S. government and the military. Most recently, he was director of the program on public policy issues in energy and resources at The Aspen Institute in Maryland. He held the post from 1978 to 1995.

Previously, from 1970-78, he worked as a consultant for a Washington-based company that engaged in arranging joint ventures between U.S. and European companies. He also served as director of the Office of International Cooperation, within the U.S. Department of Transportation, from 1968-70.

Orwick served as a career foreign service officer for the State Department from 1947 to 1968. His career also included posts in the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, the U.S. Coast Guard and Executive Office of the President.

Survivors include sons Michael Orwick of Gaithersburg, Md. and Kurt Orwick of Gainesville, Fla.; daughter Jacqueline Orwick of Rockville, Md.; and grandson Randall Orwick of Gainesville.

Orwick will receive a funeral with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on July 10.
