Dan Bonk finalist for CEO job in Craig
Dan Bonk, who resigned as CEO of Aspen Valley Hospital January, citing a need to be with his family in Wisconsin, is a finalist for an executive job at another Colorado medical facility.
Bonk is one of two remaining candidates for the CEO position at Memorial Hospital in Craig, the town’s newspaper reported Monday.
Bonk could not be reached for comment this week — his cellphone’s message box was full.
At the time of his resignation, he issued a statement saying he needed to return to his home state to be with his son who was finishing his senior year in high school, as well as the rest of his family.
“It has been difficult with my wife and son still in Wisconsin,” said Bonk, who joined the hospital as CEO in January 2014. “While I have really enjoyed being in this community, working at the hospital and getting to know so many wonderful people here, it is time for my family to be back together.”
Dr. Barry Mink was president of the tax-supported hospital’s board of directors at the time of Bonk’s exit. Mink said Wednesday that Bonk’s reason for leaving made sense because “he was distracted with his family living in Wisconsin.”
Bonk left on his terms, Mink said, and was not asked to resign or face termination.
“He resigned,” said Mink, who no longer is a board member. “He was traveling back and forth and it wasn’t working out for him.”
The hospital has yet to fill Bonk’s vacancy. Terry Collins, who had served as its chief financial officer, is serving as interim CEO. He has not indicated whether he wants to seek the full-time post.
This week, Illinois-based national search firm Witt/Kieffer posted a job description for the position.
“The ideal candidate will be an accomplished health care executive that has experience working with a publicly elected board and a track record of engaging a broad range of key constituencies in the delivery of innovative, world-class health care,” the description says. “This leader will have outstanding interpersonal skills and will be an ambassador for patient centric health care in all of the communities AVH serves.”
The job description also touts Aspen as a “cultural outpost famed for its embrace of the arts,” calling the city’s demographics “unique” and the CEO “a highly visible executive in the communities served by Aspen Valley Hospital.”
According to the description, key goals for the new CEO include having a healthy relationship with the hospital’s board members, working closely with the hospital’s foundation president, improving alliances among both hospital and non-hospital physicians, meeting the goals of the third and fourth phases of the hospital’s expansion, and ensuring that the upstart OrthoAspen is financially and operationally feasible, among other objectives.
